For more than twenty years, I' have photographed the human body in ways that range from documentary photography to fine art nudes. Along the way, I've learned that nudity is one of the most misunderstood subjects in photography.
People often assume that nudity is simply about the absence of clothing. My experience has taught me otherwise.
Whether photographing on the beaches of Fire Island, in the streets of New York, or during intimate portrait sessions, I have found that the human body tells stories of identity, trust, vulnerability, freedom, and the cultures we create together. Every photograph captures a moment in time, yet it also invites reflection on broader questions of beauty, censorship, body positivity, and the ever-changing ways we perceive ourselves.
Nude at Great South Bay | Fire Island Fine Art Photography | koitzA fine art photograph of a nude figure resting along the shoreline of Great South Bay, Fire Island, blending the human form with the tranquil coastal landscape at dusk.
These essays bring together my experiences as a documentary and fine art photographer with the history of the nude in art and photography. I explore why nudity has inspired artists for centuries, how different societies have embraced or rejected the naked body, and why places like Fire Island became symbols of authenticity and self-expression for generations of LGBTQ+ people.
Some essays are inspired by photographs I've made over the past twenty-something years. Others examine the history of the nude, the evolution of queer culture, documentary photography, and the people and places that have shaped my work.

This is not a collection of essays about naked bodies.
It is a collection of stories about people.
About history.
About photography.
And about the remarkable ways the human body can express beauty, resilience, intimacy, and freedom.
I invite you to explore these essays and discover why nudity has remained one of the most enduring—and meaningful—subjects in art, photography, and human history.
